My 10 Favorite iPhone Apps for Los Angeles
by Todd Nathanson on June 24, 2010O.K., I’ll admit it, I’m addicted to my iPhone. And if you have one, you’ll probably agree that the phone part is the least of it.
To be certain, I’m a certified app junkie as well (83 at last count). I have travel apps and news apps. Food apps and game apps. Weather apps and traffic apps. Social Media apps and sports apps. Get the picture?
So I thought I’d share which apps are the most vital for me as a lifelong Angeleno. Here are my Top 10 Apps for L.A.:
1. Open Table: If you live in L.A. and you’re not already an Open Table member, well, you need to be. Search and reserve a table from hundreds of restaurants in and around Los Angeles. There are also reviews and links to each restaurant’s website. Each time you reserve a table (and show up for your reservation), you get points. After a certain amount of points you can request a check redeemable at any Open Table restaurant.
2. Los Angeles Times: Fortunately (or should I say finally), The LA Times completely revamped its iPhone app and the result is a huge improvement. You can now personalize the app to get the news you want, whether it be sports, business, local news, or entertainment. You can even set up push notifications to have the news come to you, as well as link to your Twitter & Facebook accounts.
3. CHP Traffic: The same information found at the California Highway Patrol’s Incident webpage is now available in an app. This app recognizes your exact location to give you up to the minute freeway info. You can even save your favorite locations. With this app you’ll never need to flip through the radio to find out about an accident. However, it only gives you incident reports (such as accidents, stalls, & lane closures), it will not tell you traffic on the 405 is bumper to bumper because it’s rush hour (but the Google map on your iPhone will).
4) Road Stoves: Road Stoves bills itself as “the only GPS enabled food truck finder”. If you have a craving for a Kogi short-rib burrito or a Brie Melt from The Grilled Cheese Truck and want to know where to find it, this app is for you. Follow over 30 food trucks in real time and never go hungry. You can also receive the latest Tweets from each truck. Did somebody say Kogi?
5. Lakers: Follow the 2-time defending NBA Champions with the Lakers app. There are plenty of Laker apps out there, but I like the official NBA app. Sure it’s a bit generic, but watching game highlights and post game press conferences while lying on the beach in Hawaii (true story) is pretty cool.
6. Sunrise & Set: Living on the Westside, there’s nothing I like to do more than watch a beautiful sunset. Now, with the Sunrise & Set app, it takes the guesswork out of knowing when the sun will disappear below the horizon. It’s also convenient if you play outdoor sports such as golf to get an accurate idea how much daylight you’ll have on the course.
7. Fandango: L.A. is arguably the entertainment capital of the world. However, there’s no argument it’s the motion picture capital of the world. So an app to help me find what’s playing in a theater near me should be a necessity. With Fandango, you can search by title or location, and you can even purchase tickets for select theaters, with more being added frequently.
8. ESPN Scorecenter: If you can’t go more than a few minutes without having to know the score, you can set-up this app to send you up to the minute notifications such as the Lakers score after each quarter, the Dodger score after each run, and the UCLA or USC football score after each point. For true sports junkies, ESPN just launched an ESPNLA app which gives up to the minute scores and news for all the LA teams.
9. Tie between Zagat and Yelp: As a kid growing up, I would always look forward to when my parents picked up the latest version of the Zagat Guide. I loved the succinct, yet tremendously accurate reviews, and the ratings based on food, service, and décor. The Zagat app, while the priciest of the apps on my list ($9.99), provides a wealth of information not just for L.A., but around the world. It’s like having a Zagat guide for every location at the push of a button – and it’s constantly updated!
I’m still kind of a newbie to Yelp, but there’s no doubt that it’s the main source of restaurant (and now much, much more) reviews for most of those in the post-Zagat generation. Sometimes I feel that people only post reviews when they have something to complain about, but overall Yelp is pretty fair and the reviewers often provide helpful tips for those trying a place for the first time.
10. In-N-Out Burger: In-N-Out Burger and the Southern California lifestyle seemingly go hand-in-hand. So the In-N-Out app should be standard issue for all Angelenos (or at least the ones who eat meat). I’ll admit that it may not be my favorite burger in L.A. (Hickory Burger at Apple Pan and Double King Egg Burger at Fatburger are tough to beat), but sometimes I just get that craving. It’s a pretty simple app, with only a map and list of the nearest locations, but it pinpoints your location and let’s you know where to find the nearest double-double with grilled onions. Now I just made myself hungry….oh, lookie here, there’s one in Westwood. See ya!

These are only 10 of the apps I find useful in L.A., I’m sure there are dozens more. What apps do you use that should be in the Top 10? Let me know, I’m always looking for that next great app!
ESPN ScoreCenter, hands down, my most used app. Love it.
I also use NetNewsWire a lot, which is a great app. It syncs with your Google Reader account and updates the blogs you read so you can read them on the fly. The best part is that when you log-in to Google Reader later, it knows what you’ve already read on NetNewsWire so you don’t miss a beat.
Also Twitter. A simple app but nice and easy to use. FourSquare. And Words With Friends Free. Super addictive so be careful otherwise you’ll find all your spare moments whisked away.
